misplaced innocence.

He pushes his world while transfixed to the oblivious movement of the people. He nonchalantly walks in the midst of the vehicles’ seemingly insane demeanor. He hears the incessant noise of the Earth, yet he moves carelessly, and for a time, he ceases to understand time and space and motion. Yet he has to continue moving.

He familiarizes himself with the new area. Armed with his trusty cart, he pushes into unchartered ground, not knowing where his feet will take him. His voice attempts to overwhelm the entire place. He shouts, as if he needs to inform the world of his existence, but nothing ever comes out of his mouth. He is lost in his own consciousness. But he has to move still. This is his only way to survive.

He continues to drift into oblivion, finding solace in nothingness. He can feel the warmth of the concrete while pulling his feet to find paradise. Everyone is indifferent, as if he does not exist. But deep inside, he feels that the world magnifies his existence. He senses it akin to a desert waiting for the first drop of rain, or a bee finding its nectar. And he feels lost, naked even.

He finds his spot. Cold, dark, empty, and away from the prying eyes of the world. He retreats while his eyes sparkle with ease. He retrieves the food he got from the garbage can earlier. It still smells fresh, and may have been eaten only an hour ago. These days, you can’t get any luckier than that.

He pushes his cart and finds solace in this own empty world. He rests after a tiring day. Tomorrow, the world will again serve as his playground.

*To the kid who sleeps on the pavement, who finds life extraordinary than most of us.
