We have no heroes, only
superstars. Bonifacio is no longer the vogue. The advent of reality television,
absurd lunchtime shows, and sappy telenovelas have blurred our values and sense
of individuality. We are now enamored by fair skin, twangs, and
Gwiyomi-inspired videos. Gone are the days when a man is measured through
strength of character or words of wisdom. This generation has become a tad soft, and a bit focused on the
wrong kind of dreams.
We are dying as a country, and
no one seems to bother. Our government is still bent on proclaiming that we are
the new tiger cub of Asia, but that speech has been going on since the Ramos
Administration. The masa clamors for the government to help them, give them
more food, create more jobs, and build more houses. They are continuously asking
for more, but doing less. Instead, they are involved in procreating more
children, with the hope that one of them would save them from poverty. They,
however, have enough money to save up for prepaid cards and vote for the latest
reality star.
The future is bleak. With the elections
coming, the names up for elections are still the same ten, fifteen years ago.
They dominate the positions on the basis of surnames, notwithstanding the fact
that they do not have any experiences in governance. They mudsling and throw tirades at
each other with the false promise of creating more jobs, removing taxes, and lowering the
prices of gasoline and food. But that has been the empty promises for as long as I can
remember. Nothing really changes in this jurisdiction, except the politician’s pot belly.

| How to effect change is still the question. http://blogs.dunyanews.tv/?p=5715 |
And here we all are, trapped in
the middle, not knowing the lasting changes that we could make. Not knowing what
efforts would be sufficient to create ripples of possibilities. True, everything
starts from the self. But for someone who has done things, the jadedness starts to creep in.
It is said that in the absence
of a great dream, pettiness prevails. It saddens me to know that there is no
higher purpose in what we are doing. There is no desire to prove everyone
wrong, no desire to leave a legacy for the next generation. No one is angry
enough to do more than stand idly by. We just get fed up, pack up, and leave. Though some party in between.
Honestly, I feel so helpless
about what is happening. I feel a passion welling up inside wanting to shout
out to the world that I want to help. I truly, truly want to change this.
Can anyone tell me how?

I've heard somewhere that we should pity more a nation who try to seek for heroes. :) Many share the sentiments, we all want to do good and help to a point that we overwhelm ourselves. Baby steps i guess, if we try to change our own "universe", maybe collectively, change might happen :)
ReplyDeleteDon't you think that this generation has been too indulgent that there seems to be no need for a collective effort for change?
